LOLER specifies the need to carry out a thorough examination of Straddle Carriers at least once every year. It is important however not to rely completely on this one inspection. Companies should also complete regular visual inspections throughout the intervening period.
Straddle Carriers can be subjected to immense forces. Components such as hoists and cables will see unavoidable wear and tear over time; especially when exposed to adverse weather conditions. Equipment failure can have very serious consequences not just for the load, but also for any plant, building structures or personnel in the surrounding area.
It is estimated that 2/3s of all overhead load incidents could have been avoided by providing proper training, and that a further 9% could have been avoided with equipment inspections.
The Good to Go Safety Check Book is an innovative tool for workplace equipment. It allows employees to carry out daily, weekly or ad-hoc inspection checks and spot potential faults before they develop into a more serious and costly defect. These safety checklists are designed to help improve safety, reduce maintenance costs and ensure compliance with legal responsibilities.
A programme of pre-use checks, regular inspections and servicing schedules should be established in accordance with the manufacturers instructions and the risks associated with using an straddle carrier. Operators should be encouraged to report defects or problems. Reported problems should be put right quickly, with the straddle carrier or associated attachment(s) taken out of service if safety critical. The straddle carrier must be thoroughly examined at least every twelve months to comply with LOLER.Each check book contains 25 individual checklists relating to crane components and mechanical checks to be completed before it is used. Duplicate carbon copies of the completed checklists are retained in the book for management records. The book also includes useful guidance notes to remind operatives what to look for during their inspection. This check book is proving a popular addition for port authorities in helping to monitor and manage dockside safety.
