National Grounds Week 2025

GroundsWeek is an annual celebration of the often overlooked groundskeeper, who plays a vital role in maintaining the green spaces that enhance our lives and support mental and physical well-being.

The week is marked by activities and campaigns to promote the profession, share best practices, and appreciate the work groundskeeping professionals accomplish. An entire week dedicated to highlighting the skills of grounds staff, whilst inspiring everyone to appreciate the industry.

Groundskeepers Roles and Responsibilities
It requires specialist training to enable for a grounds person to carry out their daily activities such as mowing, hedge-cutting, strimming and leaf blowing.

A groundskeeper is primarily responsible for the care and maintenance of turf, hedges and borders across a variety of facilities including sports grounds (football, rugby, cricket etc), outdoor recreational grounds like parks and green spaces, along with private estates. Daily tasks typically comprise of turf management, hedge maintenance, pitch marking, etc using hand-held and / or ride-on machinery, plus the use of hazardous substances such as pesticide and fertiliser.

Duties include carrying out a variety of grounds care practices on hybrid, natural and artificial surfaces, assisting with general maintenance of landscaped areas, operating irrigation systems, cleaning of ponds, painting fences, trimming hedges, general path & border maintenance, leaf / debris clearance and the removal / planting of trees / shrubs.

Due to the regular use of dangerous / hazardous equipment and / or substances, a groundskeeper has to be competent, responsible and vigilant. Part of that responsibility is to carry out regular maintenance of equipment (such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers, leaf blowers, edge trimmers, chainsaws etc) to ensure their equipment in good working order so it remains safe, efficient and precise.

Each time a piece of equipment is used it is exposed to wear and tear, which if left unchecked, could cause it to start underperforming or break. Even more importantly, a well-maintained tool is always the safest to use. With regular inspections and maintenance, you can identify and address faults early – likely preventing serious damage and / or malfunctions. Inspecting your equipment as part of your tool care routine will highlight any faults that could reduce its safe use.

Inspecting Equipment
TakeAIM is a safety inspection APP (free to download) which enables and reminds users to complete inspections on their equipment. Coupled with a web platform, TakeAIM provides analysis, visibility and insights to help manage their equipment. Each inspection is automatically sent to the web platform which can include photos or notes to provide additional information on faults, hazards or advisories.

TakeAIM allows users to create their own inspection checks, ensuring that all workplace inspections can be carried out on one system.

The web platform also hosts a maintenance log which allows you to easily resolve issues, keep track of who is responsible and even keep a record of replacement parts ordered. Register an account and you'll receive free access to the system for 30 days (no card details required).
