PUWER requires that work equipment is suitable and safe for its intended use, regularly inspected and maintained and that employees are properly trained in its use – this includes company vehicles (owned, leased or hired) as well as employee's own vehicles if used for work purposes.
The Good to Go Safety Check Book is an innovative tool for workplace equipment. It allows workers to carry out pre-use checks and spot potential faults before they develop into a more serious and costly defect. These safety checklists are designed to help improve safety, reduce maintenance costs and ensure compliance with legal responsibilities.
Managing the risks to employees who drive at work requires more than just compliance with road traffic legislation. The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires employers to take appropriate steps to ensure the health and safety of their employees and others who may be affected by their activities when at work. Employers need to have procedures in place to ensure that all vehicles (irrespective of who owns them) that are used for work conform to road traffic law, are safe, properly maintained and are fit for purpose. Companies should provide a checklist to encourage staff who drive for work to conduct weekly and/or pre-drive safety checks of their vehicle. Ref: ROSPA & HSE Guidance
The introduction of a systematic maintenance and vehicle safety inspections programme such as this allows fleet managers to receive a signed and dated vehicle safety inspection checklist which can be used as evidence of an active and up-to-date maintenance programme in the event of an accident. Basic vehicle safety inspections checks covered include the engine department for oil, screen wash, battery etc; whilst lights, mirrors, tyres and documentation are amongst the various external checks.
Each kit contains 50 individual (weekly) checklists relating to vehicle components and mechanical checks to be completed before the car or van is used. Duplicate carbon copies of the completed checklists are retained in the book for management records. The book also includes useful guidance notes to remind operatives what to look for during their inspection.
Weekly Inspection Kit includes:
• 1 x Status Tags to attach to the equipment and show its status.
• 2 x Safety Check Books provide 50 individual checklists, allowing one to be completed each week and the findings displayed inside the status tag. Additional books can be ordered as and when required.
• 1x Check Book Wallet & Pen, to store the current book and provide a suitable writing surface when completing checklists.
• 100 x Tamper Evident Seals, which can be used to deter and identify unauthorised access to the status tag.
